Problem
"Light pollution caused by outdoor artificial lights obstruct the stars from view and disrupt the ecosystem. There are certain lighting restrictions enforced by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) that help to reduce light pollution in residential areas, with some communities requiring all outdoor lighting to comply their regulations. Because of these restrictions on light output, most outdoor lighting fixtures in this market are very simple and uniform in appearance, limiting options for those looking for IDA compliant outdoor lights. I wanted to design an outdoor wall sconce that not only prevents light pollution, but offers an elegant and customizable design for the luxury market.
Process
I led a team at Hammerton Lighting to ideate, construct research, prototype, model, and deliver an outdoor sconce that fit these set parameters. We worked ensure that our design was optimal from a market, design, engineering, and manufacturing standpoint and I took the lead in designing the prototype that will be on display at the senior showcase.
Solution
Aurora achieves my goals for this project in that it is IDA certified and offers a style and level of customization not previously accessible in the market. Its design is sleek and architectural, allowing it to fit with a wide range of home styles while offering a size and material selection that puts it in the luxury market. Above all, Aurora has taught me invaluable lessons about working with a team of different specialties to bring an innovative product to the market."
